Art of Manga Exhibition Opens at Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum in New York is hosting the Art of Manga exhibition, marking its East Coast debut after previously running at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. The event runs from October 3, 2026, through January 31, 2027, and features more than 600 original drawings by influential manga artists. This large-scale presentation explores manga as an art form, highlighting iconic Japanese artwork and its global influence.

The exhibition centers on diverse mangaka who employ compelling storytelling and imagery across various genres. Featured creators include Hirohiko Araki, known for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece; Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha; and Gengoroh Tagame, acclaimed for his work in gay manga. Other notable artists displayed are Jirō Taniguchi, Mari Yamazaki, Kazumi Yamashita, and Fumi Yoshinaga.

Curated by Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere, the show begins with foundational figures like Tetsuya Chiba and Fujio Akatsuka to provide historical context. It then dedicates sections to individual artists, examining their creative processes and use of line drawing to evoke motion and emotion. The display aims to immerse viewers in each title, offering a window into the drafting skills that define the medium.
