Anime Director Rintaro Named Person of Cultural Merit
The Japanese government announced on October 23 that veteran anime director Rintaro has been selected as a Person of Cultural Merit for fiscal year 2026. This honor recognizes his outstanding achievements in cultural development and improvement, joining previous recipients such as Hayao Miyazaki and Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Rintaro, born in Tokyo in 1941, began his career at Toei Animation in 1958 before making his directorial debut with Tetsuwan Atom in 1963. His notable works include Galaxy Express 999, Metropolis, and Nezumikozo Jirokichi. Madhouse issued a statement congratulating him on the award.
